Watching King John

A kingdom for a stage, princes to act

And monarchs to behold the swelling scene!

– Henry V, Prologue

As much as I love reading Shakespeare, the speeches truly come alive when they are spoken from the stage. Whenever possible, when studying or teaching a play, I try to look for a good production.

I’m frequently frustrated. Often, I’ll like many elements of one production, but simultaneously dislike other elements or portrayals. I may have a picture in my mind of how a speech should be, and a performance doesn’t live up to my expectations. When I teach Shakespeare, I rarely show an entire production, but create a Frankenstein blend of scenes from different productions.

Even so, the process of listening to varied productions enriches and opens up new understanding, and makes those puzzling passages meaningful through body language and tone. I love a passage even more when performed well.

So, throughout our read-through, take some time to find some good productions and watch them. As I come across productions that I find valuable and enjoyable, I’ll pass them along. I’d love for you to give me feedback as well: which productions have you seen? Where do you go to find quality productions?

Let’s get the conversation going!

Here is a version of King John that was recently shared with me, and I found it engaging and enjoyable. I didn’t love Constance’s grief speech (which is my favorite speech in the play), but Philip Faulconbridge is hilarious and well-performed.

Let me know your thoughts on it, or what your own favorite performance of the play is!
